M1E5 Experimental Paratrooper Garand
This video explores the M1E5 Experimental Paratrooper Garand, a rare firearm developed in January 1944. The 93rd Infantry Division field-modified an M1 with a shorter barrel for potential paratrooper use. John Garand at Springfield Armory further developed the concept, creating a prototype in spring 1944 with an underfolding stock and a modified grip. The experimental rifle was 5 inches shorter and 1.2 pounds lighter than a standard M1 but suffered from excessive blast and concussion. Testing revealed discomfort with the initial grip, and subsequent modifications with a steel pistol grip were also unsatisfactory. Ultimately, the project was deemed undesirable and did not progress further. The video highlights the historical significance of this unique specimen from the Springfield Armory National Historic Site.
